- Wild cacao: A cacao that grows wild in the forest where the fruits are foraged without disturbing the landscape.
- Native cacao: A cacao that originates from a specific terroir, or a cacao that has been cultivated in a specific terroir for several centuries or millennia.
- Heritage cacao: A cacao that has been cultivated in a specific terroir for at least two generations within a specialty cacao tradition.
